The Internet is My Religon

Posted by ayofemikirby on June 9, 2011

Hi everyone,

Earlier this week I attended the annual Personal Democracy Forum in NYC. The two-day conference examines the intersection of democracy and politics and provides previews of the latest innovations that utilize technology for social change.

This year, the theme was “Agents of Change” and there were no keynote speakers. Instead, there was collection of 10 minute TED-style talks from the brightest minds and leading innovators in the field. Many were very good, but few were able to captivate the audience’s attention and keep them from typing, texting, or tweeting, like Jim Gilliam whose talk was titled “The Internet is My Religion”.

I will do his story no justice by trying to summarize it, but Jim really captured the power that lies in the use of the internet and social media with intention and with purpose. PDF noted in today’s newsletter that within one day, Jim’s talk has been viewed 62,000 times.  Watch the video below, and note you will have to enter an email address to view it in its entirety. (We can talk about that as an issue later.)
