smartphones…the good, the bad, and The Oatmeal

Posted by joellecostello on June 24, 2011

You may not all remember this, but when cordless home telephones came out it was a big deal (not unlike TV remote controls).  Then there were cellular phones that didn’t need to be plugged in to a wall.  Instead, you carried them around in a suitcase.  Then there were cellular phones installed in cars — anyone remember those little car antennas with the swirl?

Well, things have changed.  Technology that used to be too expensive for the masses has become cheaper, and smaller, and more comprehensive.  Instead of carrying around a telephone, we carry smartphones.  These genius devices have phones, cameras, texting, the web, and allow us to really ‘do more with less.’

So, is it a blessing or a curse?  Do we work smarter or harder?  Are those of us with work-issued phones obligated to check emails form work when we’re not working?  Should we always be on call?  Are we really that important?

I don’t have the answers, but The Oatmeal has something to say about it.
