Technologically Anxious

Posted by jmillili on July 17, 2012

AnxietyUK, a non-profit organization that provides support for those living with anxiety disorders, recently released a report that suggests the use of technology increases anxiousness in people. It is no question we live in a time where communication is instantaneous, mobile connectivity is a must-have and accessibility to all things digital is commonplace, however, what is typically embraced as innovative and creative is now being pinned as the source of anxious people all over the globe. With digital advances being introduced frequently, it is no surprise that this technological overload is not going away anytime soon.

According to the study, “Factors such as negatively comparing themselves to others, spending too much time in front of a computer, having trouble being able to disconnect and relax, as well as becoming confrontational online cause problems in their relationships or job.”

As communication professionals it is our job to monitor social sites, digitally engage with the public and maintain a consistent web presence across multiple media platforms on a daily basis. What was once considered to be a personal past time has now become a professional necessity–finding the balance between work and play and really knowing when to digitally turn ourselves off is something we all have to be able to deal with in our lives.
