Ikea’s new version printed catalogs will add some AR features

Posted by madelines on July 21, 2012

Ikea distributed its printed catalogs since 1951. Even though the whole marketing world is switching from print media to online media, Ikea doesn’t show any plan to dump this unique service. Now the company is trying to add some new augmented reality(AR) features on this service via mobile app.(Ikea’s catalog app preview)

Ikea produced an app to allow customers check out the insides and outsides of the products showed on printed catalogs. The app is available on Android and iOS mobile devices. Anyone who owns a Smartphone or a tablet can launch the furniture company’s app and hold their phone over the product on the printed page to check out the furnitures. Videos and 3-D models will also be available. The new catalog and Android/iOS app will be distributed at the end of July.

Ikea’s new strategy indicats that this Swedian furniture company is trying to emerge into the social media market. Even though this app is supposed to be accompanied with the printed catalogs, I believe the adoption shows that a majority of big companies is gradually joining the trend of digitizing the service.
