Using social media for your own investigation

Posted by Nadia Amika on July 22, 2012

One Reddit user used social media to gather details around the eastern Toronto shooting that left two people dead and 21 wounded. Then the user posted the information for the Toronto community to see the Twitter handles of individuals who attended the party. The post went viral and was used by some media outlets to track down individuals for interviews. A few Twitter users who were sited in the post changed their Twitter status to private.

This post ties back into the classroom conversation we had about the tweets of an Occupy Movement Twitter user being subpoenaed for use in the courtroom. The Reddit user was able to identify the host and individuals attending the party and find tweets that he thought suggested “violence was possible?” With individuals using social media to find information on others and to assess a person’s thoughts, will there soon be social media forensic scientists, who can intelligibly read into the tweets of users to determine intent and emotional state and use the information in court?
