What Happens in Vegas…

Posted by jmillili on July 24, 2012

Last week MGM Resorts International launched an initiative that allows M life members to connect their social media and loyalty rewards accounts. By doing so, visitors are awarded the opportunity to earn different perks during their Vegas stay simply by updating their personal social media accounts.

According to an article in the Las Vegas Sun, “The social media connection is the latest in a trend of developing apps that put the Las Vegas Strip at the fingertips of smartphone users.” Members may now use Twitter, Facebook, Foursquare or Instagram by posting updates, checking in and sharing photos of their trip to earn perks. Here’s how the initiative works:

  • Make a location-based update to Twitter, Facebook places, Foursquare or Instagram to earn 500 credits for each MGM resort visited in a day
  • Members move up a tier level at 25,000 credits and discounts/rewards are allotted based on the number of credits racked up

The more credits that members accrue during their trip the more eligible they are for better prizes and greater discounts. Such perks include tickets to shows and free hotel stays. Businesses that offer social rewards for people sharing content on their personal sites is starting to trend more and more these days.

Personally, I think it is a great initiative for businesses because it generates more exposure for companies while rewarding loyal customers. So obviously what’s happening in Vegas isn’t staying there, rather, what happens in Vegas is being uploaded, photographed, updated in statuses, tweeted, and shared on instagram in real-time for all the world to see. What do you think about social rewards—would you tweet a status for a discounted meal? Check in a bar for a free drink? I know I would.

  1. Looks to me like a doomed initiative. Security and privacy concerns are formidable threats to the concept.

  2. Since nothing that happens in Vegas actually seems to stay there anyway, I’d totally cash in for some free rewards. It’s not like I would win at the tables anyway…might as well walk away with something!
