Search and Rescue via Social Media

Much like our crisis analysis assignment the Philippines government agencies, non-profit organizations, and citizens used Twitter and Facebook to communicate information to displaced residents and residents who were stuck on rooftops in the recent flood in Manila, Philippines. This use of social media has proven useful in emergency situations for disseminating information. It will be interesting to see how large aide groups like the Red Cross execute disaster assistance using social media beyond the texting for financial support component, but for getting to tweeters for rescue and aide.
