Marissa’s Shopping Spree

Posted by Stephanie on May 25, 2013

ImageEven with the White House’s strong push for STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) initiatives for women, being a woman in the STEM field is a challenge. Defining oneself as a CEO in a business, let alone one of the biggest tech centric businesses in the world is difficult regardless of gender. However this task becomes only escalated when you’re a woman working in a male dominated field. Could a desire to establish herself as a leader and strong business woman in the world of technology be the explanation for Marissa Mayer’s recent shopping spree?

Ever since Mayer took the role of Yahoo CEO, she has been shaking up the business and naturally not without controversy. First she made the move to relinquish telecommuting for all her employees as an effort to enhance innovation and keep the company’s creativity organic. This was followed only a few months later by the recent 1.1 billion dollar cash purchase of Tumblr, which put Mayer’s name back in headlines. Most recently, a Huffington Post article announced Mayer’s bid for the online TV and movie streaming site Hulu which has been gaining popularity in the last few years and is currently owned by a number of companies including Disney.

Yahoo has come in second (and maybe even third or fourth) to Google for years, so could all this purchasing and news circulation be Mayer’s attempt to put Yahoo back (or more noticeably) on the map? It is unjust to reduce her strategies and business practices to just establishing herself as a CEO woman in the field, however she is making big moves and making them quickly. Who knows if Yahoo will actually win the bid, but I’m sure we will hear about it in the near future. I’m also sure this will not be the last we hear from Marissa Mayer or her plans for Yahoo.
