Is It Just Me, Or Has Mark Zuckerberg Had A Rough Year?

Posted by hlg123 on June 9, 2013

In light of the latest scandal to rock the tech industry, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg took to his Facebook page yesterday to respond to accusations related to Facebook’s participation in the PRISM program. There seems to be a lot of information (and misinformation) flying around about the details of this program. These recent data-mining revelations are one in a series of events that have kept Facebook in the news, and unlike the years of the platforms skyrocketing success, the past several months of been bumpy, to say the least.

From Facebook’s beleaguered stock, to recent outcries regarding violent content being allowed on the cite, to speculation that newer platforms like Snapchat are supplanting Facebook as the platform of innovation, the social media giant appears to be in the throes of a serious indentity crisis.

Which begs the question, even with the brightest minds and deepest pockets, are even the biggest social media platforms immune from user fatigue? In an industry that is defined by speed and innovation, can anyone or any company stay on top for a sustained period of time? While I can’t imagine a world without Facebook, is it feasible that they may one day go the way of Myspace and other defunct, outdated platforms? A year ago, I would have said impossible. Today, I’m not so certain.
