Before social media was around, we used to put it out with the image galleries and RSS feeds, and we had this award winning website. But this stuff kind of sat in a vacuum. What social media allows us to do is deliver information directly to people.

I’m kind of in love with the Curiosity Rover.

In fact, the whole NASA social team is pretty awesome. Recently named one of the top 25 most engaging brands on Twitter, the actual depth of the social media program goes much further than cute tweets from Curiosity.

The quote above is from NASA’s social media manager, John Yembrick, and it explains the agency’s willingness to embrace social media as a means of communication. Recently, NASA hosted a series of online and television events centered around an astroid’s passing of Earth.

NASA’s followers can also apply for social media credentials, which allow the “same access as journalists in an effort to align the access and experience of social media representatives with those of traditional media. People who actively collect, report, analyze and disseminate news on social networking platforms are encouraged to apply for media credentials.” More information can be found here.
