AU MA Social Media

A class blog about social media.

Facebook has finally embraced the hashtag. According to the article, a select group of users will be able to use them today and the feature will be extended to more users later this week.

In my opinion, this was a smart choice on behalf of Facebook considering many users were already using the hashtag anyway.

The most interesting new feature is that users will be able to “compose posts directly from a hashtag feed and search results.” This is definitely the next “live blog” venue.

However, do you think Facebook is a little late to the party with the hashtag? I would venture to say that users have been including hashtags in their posts for at least six months, if not a year? What do you think this means for user privacy? Will every post that we hashtag show up on a public feed?

It will be interesting to see how many people make use of this new feature!
