Twitter Helps Locate Lost Red Panda

This morning, the Smithsonian National Zoo alerted the public via social media that Rusty, the one-year-old Red Panda, had been reported missing from his enclosure. He had not been seen since 6 pm the night before. Although this isn’t the first time an animal has gone missing from a major zoo, it was a great example of how a major organization can use Twitter to update the public in real-time on the details of a developing crisis. All day long, @NationalZoo was Tweeting on the major developments of the day, including the natural instincts of wild Red Pandas and instructions on what to do if you locate him around or outside the zoo. Rest assured, in the end, Rusty was found and has been safely escorted back to his habitat in the zoo…he got tired of his enclosure and decided to take a walk through Adams Morgan. He return was due in part to a Twitter follower who saw Rusty on the street and reported it to the zoo.
