How Safe Are We Online?

Posted by My Freshman Year of Life on June 26, 2013

Last week, Facebook accidentally shared 6 million user’s email and telephone number due to a software bug. Although the company contacted those who’ve been affected, it wasn’t clear at all on how the glitch could jeopardize users’ identity, which brings me to this question: How safe are we online?

Facebook over the years has made it possible for us to block information from our boss and friends users, they even went as far as naming your friends when you’re forget your password. However, when something we have no control takes place what else can we do. Unfortunately nothing.

According to Facebook “The breach was caused by an unfortunate combination of Facebook’s “People You May Know” and “Download Your Information” features. “People You May Know” offers friend suggestions based in part on other users’ uploaded contact lists or address books; “Download Your Information” offers a downloadable version of your Facebook Timeline archive. “Confusing right?

Who knows what other infromations were shared? At this point we can only hope for the best.
