Sunday’s Supermoon Lighted Up Social Media

Posted by vickydanqingzhang on June 26, 2013

If you looked up in the sky early Sunday morning, congratulations, you witnessed the largest, brightest full moon of the year. The moon reached its closest proximity to Earth at 4:32 a.m. PDT on Sunday. The result, a so-called Supermoon, appears up to 14% larger and 30% brighter than a typical full moon. The supermoon may have a tiny effect on the Earth, but it did have an impressive effect on social media.

The supermoon put on quite a show on social media worldwide. People from all over the world reached for their cameras and posted pictures on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, Flickr, Cyworld (Korean social media site), Weibo (Chinese social media site), Mixi (Japanese social media site), and Bebo (UK social media site) to document this phenomenon. It was not a surprise to us. People are sharing every little detail of their lives on social media now; of course they shared this phenomenal view with the entire world.
