iDiversicons

If you’re anything like me, your text messages seem incomplete without an emoticon. My personal favorite is this guy: Screen Shot 2014-07-28 at 1.42.09 PM

While the popular Emoji app provides a large list to choose from, it does suffer from lack of diversity. When you have the option of sending your friends 7 different notebooks, you should certainly be offered people of all races, sexual orientations, etc.

Former NASA employee Katrina Parrott set out to address this issue by creating iDiversicons. Parrott’s goal, presented in the video below, was for “all people to be able to find an emoticon that looked like them.”

She accomplished this by providing 900+ options. These include “same-sex couples, interracial couples, hand symbols with different skin tones, heads with different hair styles, head coverings, and piercings,” according to an article in Bustle. Additionally, the app also addresses gender equality and stereotypes by providing “things like female construction workers and male nurses.”

The iDiversicons app was first available in the App Store in October 2013, and, as of June, is now available through Google Play. Currently, Parrott is working to have her emoticons available as a keyboard option.

  1. I am going to stick to the regular emoticons. They remind me of the Walmart happy face. I don’t think the regular emoticons intentions were to discriminate anyone. Personally, I don’t want to spend time looking through different emoticons to find the perfect fit. I think her intentions were great and will capture people’s attention. Good Article!
