You’ve Cat To Be Kitten Me

Posted by chelseatufarolo on August 4, 2014

Talking to strangers has become a social norm thanks to apps like Tinder and Grindr. The iOS and Android app MeowChat, named for the app’s cartoon cat-themed design, follows this lead.

Although the app has been around for about a year, MeowChat has recently relaunched with its new offerings of one-on-one and group chat options. The messaging features, which allow users to send pictures, audio and video, have been compared to the app WhatsApp. In addition to the familiar geographically based matches, MeowChat also has a more randomized Chat Roulette-like feature which can pair you up with users from anywhere in the world.

MeowChat’s most unique, and controversial feature, is its use of gamification. Users are encouraged to favorite pictures and spam their Facebook friends for the sole purpose of earning “Meow Points.” The Independent criticized the app for both its “Meow Points” feature and lack of security, although MeowChat’s safety concerns are arguably the same as those of most social networking sites and dating apps.

MeowChat is apparently the most-downloaded messaging app in the UK and Australia, but has yet to gain the same popularity in the United States. Because of its similarity to other successful apps, I’m not sure MeowChat will ever take off. Although, considering the virality of internet felines, you never know how people may respond.
