Welcome to the Summer 2012 Social Media Class Blog

Posted by aumasocialmedia on July 9, 2012

Hello and welcome, students of COMM552-D01! I’m excited for the summer semester at the American University School of Communication. This blog will be used to post information about the Social Media Strategy and Tactics class, including the syllabus, reading assignments, the blogroll, and other relevant details. Additionally, students will be required to post an average of two updates on the class blog per week. The purpose of the class blog is to provide familiarity on how to use a blog, as well as to keep the class apprised of the latest social media news. But don’t simply post news stories or links. Analyze the significance of what you’re sharing and tell us how it relates to communications and emerging technology. Postings should be generated from the required blogs as well as mainstream media. Also, be sure to comment on your fellow students’ blog posts.

Do you have something you want to share with me or with your classmates? Share it here. Aside from the required postings, feel free to share news that might be of interest or benefit to the class. The more you practice with new technology, the more comfortable you’ll become with it. So have fun and let us know if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Paul F. Bove @paulfbove

The AU MA Social Media Glossary

Posted by aumasocialmedia on June 24, 2011

Good work, all, on your input for the social media glossary. This is a solid list of some new, and some not so new, but still relevant social media tools. I hope this exercise gave you some exposure to the myriad tools that are out there for organizations to choose from. The thing to remember is that not every tool will work for every organization. But knowing what is available, and the relevance and/or reach of the tool, can help influence your communication plan. Click here to learn more.

CDC blogs/uses “Zombie Apocalypse” for emergency preparedness

Posted by JC on May 20, 2011

On Monday, CDC’s blogged Preparedness 101: Zombie Apocalypse.  Link here:  http://emergency.cdc.gov/socialmedia/zombies_blog.asp.  Anyone can take any angle here.  One is the use of social media and blogging and twittering:  This published on Monday and by Wednesday CDC’s server crashed because of overload and by Thursday, CDC was receiving one tweet a minute.   Social media was used here, and the bait?  Zombies. hmm.  Some say that this was great for getting the attention of youth, yet, CDC wants behavior change and do we see 20 somethings making emergency prepared kits? Dont know.  Some say this is shameful and embarrassing that the federal government has gone to the lowest form of gorilla marketing and lost older generation as an audience.  The outcome we want…is behavior change…in 3 months CDC will survey a random sample to see if they are now..more prepared for hurricane season for fear of zombies.
